Keyword Prevalence

Scroll down on the visualization above to see number of photographs over time.

This visualization shows the prevalence of a selection of both outdated and contemporary terminology for “the disabled” in UN Photo Library search results over time, beginning with the first photograph from the dataset (1945) to the last (as of November 2017).

The last graph, which shows the total number over time of photographs tagged with the keywords “disabled,” “cripple,” “retard,” and “handicap,” reflects the ebb and flow of international public interest in the topic of disability. There is one noticeable spike in photographs on disability during the late 1970s and early 1980s, coinciding with the 1981 IYDP.
